Setting the scene
Thomas and Nancy Lincoln raised their son in a one-room log cabin near Hodgenville, Kentucky, on the frontier of the early republic. Young Abraham received little formal schooling but read borrowed books by firelight, developing a reputation for storytelling and physical strength.
What happened
Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, the same calendar day as Charles Darwin, though half a world apart. The family moved to Indiana after land-title disputes and later to Illinois, where Lincoln worked as a rail-splitter, store clerk, surveyor, and self-taught lawyer.
Why it still matters
Lincoln's birth year placed him among the last presidents born in a log cabin and the first to lead through civil war and emancipation. Memorable detail: the original cabin site is enshrined inside a neoclassical memorial building at the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park.
