Los Angeles hair metal dominated Sunset Strip clubs in the mid-1980s, but Guns N' Roses brought punk grit and blues sleaze from Hollywood's underbelly. Axl Rose, Slash, Izzy Stradlin, Duff McKagan, and Steven Adler lived hard while Geffen Records hoped for a rawer alternative to Poison.

What happened

Appetite for Destruction was released on July 21, 1987, initially selling slowly until Sweet Child o' Mine's guitar intro and Welcome to the Jungle videos hit MTV. Tracks like Paradise City and Nightrain captured LA excess with Rose's snake-dance vocals and Slash's top hat silhouette.

Why it still matters

The album sold over 30 million copies worldwide, defined hard rock for a generation, and influenced nu-metal and modern rock attitude. Its cover art by Robert Williams was controversial in stores. Memorable detail: Sweet Child o' Mine's famous opening riff began as Slash joking around with a string-skipping exercise during a jam.
