Boxer Protocol Signed

Setting the scene

The Boxer Protocol was signed on September 7, 1901 (though the Boxer Rebellion ended in 1900, the protocol is dated 1901, but the event is often associated with 1900), ending the Boxer Rebellion in China. The Boxers, members of the Society of Righteous and Harmonious Fists, were anti-foreign, anti-Christian militants who rose in 1899-1900, killing missionaries and Chinese Christians. In June 1900, they besieged the foreign legations in Beijing, with support from Empress Dowager Cixi, who declared war on foreign powers.

What happened

An Eight-Nation Alliance (Japan, Russia, Britain, France, U.S., Germany, Italy, Austria-Hungary) sent 20,000 troops who captured Beijing in August 1900, lifting the siege. The allies looted the city and occupied northern China. Negotiations led to the Boxer Protocol, signed by China and 11 nations. The terms were punitive: China paid 450 million taels of silver (about $335 million, more than the government's annual revenue) over 39 years with interest, totaling 982 million taels; allowed foreign troops in Beijing; destroyed forts; and executed officials who supported the Boxers.

Why it still matters

The Boxer Protocol humiliated China, deepened foreign control, and contributed to the Qing dynasty's collapse in 1911. The indemnity burdened China's economy for decades—the U.S. used its share to fund Chinese students studying in America, creating Tsinghua University. The protocol exemplified unequal treaties and foreign imperialism in China, fueling Chinese nationalism. It also demonstrated the limits of anti-foreign violence—while the Boxers expressed legitimate grievances, their defeat led to even greater foreign domination, a lesson that influenced later Chinese revolutionary strategies.
