Setting the scene
After World War II, European physics was in ruins—many top scientists had fled to the United States, and research facilities were destroyed. American physicists dominated the field, with access to funding and equipment Europeans lacked. In 1949, French physicist Louis de Broglie proposed a European physics laboratory, and at a UNESCO conference in 1950, American physicist Isidor Rabi suggested a regional laboratory to pool resources. Twelve European nations signed an agreement in 1953 to create the European Organization for Nuclear Research, from the French Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire—CERN.
What happened
CERN was officially founded on September 29, 1954, with its headquarters in Meyrin, near Geneva, Switzerland, chosen for its neutrality. The original members were Belgium, Denmark, France, West Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and Yugoslavia. The laboratory's first accelerator, the Synchrocyclotron, began operating in 1957. CERN's founding principle was open science—results would be published freely, and the lab would be international and collaborative, helping heal post-war divisions. The convention specified CERN would have 'no military purpose.'
Why it still matters
CERN became the world's premier particle physics laboratory, leading to discoveries including the W and Z bosons (1983), the Higgs boson (2012), and the World Wide Web (invented by Tim Berners-Lee at CERN in 1989). The Large Hadron Collider, completed in 2008, is the world's largest machine at 17 miles circumference. CERN demonstrated that international scientific collaboration could transcend political divisions—even during the Cold War, Soviet scientists worked at CERN. With 23 member states and 10,000 visiting scientists, CERN is a model for big science and has trained generations of physicists. Its commitment to open science accelerated discovery and made it a symbol of peaceful international cooperation.
