Setting the scene
Concorde was the icon of supersonic passenger flight, crossing the Atlantic in less than half the time of conventional jets. By 2000, however, it was expensive, noisy, fuel-hungry, and operated on limited routes by Air France and British Airways. Its safety image was strong, but the fleet was aging and depended on specialized maintenance and a wealthy niche passenger market.
What happened
On July 25, 2000, Air France Flight 4590 struck a metal strip on the runway at Charles de Gaulle Airport during takeoff. The debris burst a tire, and fragments damaged the wing and fuel tank, causing a fire. The Concorde lost thrust and crashed into a hotel in Gonesse, killing all 109 people aboard and four on the ground. Investigators later focused on the debris, tire failure, fuel-tank vulnerability, and operational factors.
Why it still matters
The crash grounded Concorde, led to safety modifications, and badly damaged public confidence in supersonic passenger travel. Although Concorde returned to service, the downturn after September 11 and high operating costs led to its retirement in 2003. Memorable detail: Flight 4590 was the only fatal Concorde accident, yet it effectively marked the beginning of the end for the supersonic airliner.
