Setting the scene
By 1879, electric lighting existed but used arc lamps—bright, harsh, and impractical for homes. Gas lighting caused fires and pollution. Thomas Edison, who had invented the phonograph in 1877, set out to create a practical incandescent bulb at Menlo Park, New Jersey. He tested 6,000 plant materials for filaments.
What happened
On October 21, 1879, Edison's team tested a carbonized cotton thread filament in a vacuum bulb. It burned for 13.5 hours. By November, they achieved 40 hours, and by 1880, bamboo filaments lasted 1,200 hours. Edison didn't invent the lightbulb—others had made earlier versions—but he created the first practical, long-lasting, commercially viable system including generators, wiring, and meters. He demonstrated it publicly December 31, 1879.
Why it still matters
Edison's bulb, patented in 1880, launched the electric age. He built the first power station on Pearl Street, Manhattan, in 1882, lighting 400 bulbs. By 1900, millions of homes had electricity. The lightbulb extended work and leisure hours, enabled factories to run 24/7, and transformed cities with electric streetlights. Edison's Menlo Park became the model for industrial R&D labs. The bulb became the universal symbol of invention and ideas, though Edison's DC system lost to Tesla and Westinghouse's AC.
