Setting the scene
The LZ 129 Hindenburg was the pride of Nazi Germany—a 804-foot-long zeppelin, the largest aircraft ever built, representing German technological supremacy. It was designed to use non-flammable helium, but the United States, which controlled the world's helium supply, refused to export it to Nazi Germany under the Helium Control Act of 1927. The Hindenburg was therefore forced to use highly flammable hydrogen. It offered luxurious transatlantic service, with private cabins, a dining room, a lounge with a piano, and even a smoking room (pressurized to prevent hydrogen ignition). A one-way ticket cost $400 ($8,000 today).
What happened
On May 6, 1937, the Hindenburg was completing its 63rd flight, arriving at Lakehurst Naval Air Station in New Jersey after a 3-day crossing from Frankfurt. It carried 36 passengers and 61 crew. At 7:25 p.m., while attempting to land in light rain and electrical conditions, the airship suddenly burst into flames at the tail. The hydrogen ignited, and the entire ship was consumed in 34 seconds. The disaster was captured on film and in Herbert Morrison's famous radio broadcast: 'Oh, the humanity!' Thirty-six people died—13 passengers, 22 crew, and 1 ground crew member. Miraculously, 62 survived, many by jumping from the burning airship.
Why it still matters
The Hindenburg disaster, witnessed by newsreel cameras and broadcast live on radio, ended the airship era overnight. Public confidence in lighter-than-air travel collapsed. The cause remains debated—static electricity, sabotage, or a hydrogen leak ignited by the ship's fabric coating. The disaster demonstrated the power of mass media to shape public perception; the vivid images and Morrison's emotional commentary created an indelible impression. The Hindenburg's sister ship, Graf Zeppelin II, was scrapped in 1940. The disaster marked the end of the golden age of airships and confirmed that airplanes, not dirigibles, were the future of air travel. The Hindenburg remains the most famous airship disaster in history.
