Setting the scene

Queensbridge projects had produced Marley Marl and MC Shan, but Nasir Jones, age seventeen, promised a sharper portrait of New York poverty. Columbia Records signed Nas amid a 1993 shooting incident that left a rival wounded, adding mythic danger to his debut. Producers included DJ Premier, Large Professor, Pete Rock, and Q-Tip.

What happened

Illmatic was released on April 19, 1994, with ten tracks including N.Y. State of Mind, The World Is Yours, and One Love written as letters from prison. Nas painted Queensbridge with jazz loops and internal rhymes that critics called near-perfect. Initial sales were modest compared to pop rap, but respect grew quickly.

Why it still matters

Illmatic is still cited as hip-hop's perfect album in polls and classrooms, influencing Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole. It proved lyricism could be the selling point. Memorable detail: the cover photo of young Nas was shot when he was about seven years old, years before he wrote the rhymes about that same landscape.
