By 1368, China had been under Mongol Yuan rule for nearly a century. The Yuan were overthrown by Zhu Yuanzhang, a peasant who became a rebel leader and founded the Ming Dynasty. The Ming also developed naval artillery, with treasure ships under Zheng He (1405-1433) carrying cannons. By the 15th century, Ming China had the world's most advanced gunpowder technology, with specialized units and manuals like the Huolongjing (Fire Drake Manual) detailing weapons.
Why it still matters
The Ming's adoption of gunpowder weapons in 1368 marks the beginning of the gunpowder age in East Asia and the world's first gunpowder empire. Ming military power allowed them to expel the Mongols, defend against later invasions, and project power overseas. However, the Ming later fell behind European firearms technology in the 16th century, contributing to their eventual overthrow by the Manchus in 1644. The Ming's early lead in gunpowder demonstrates China's technological sophistication and the importance of state investment in military technology. Gunpowder, invented in China, would eventually enable European global dominance—a classic case of a technology having greater impact outside its place of origin.
