Setting the scene
Nebuchadnezzar II, son of Nabopolassar, became king of the Neo-Babylonian Empire in 605 BC after defeating the Egyptians at Carchemish. He inherited an empire that had destroyed Assyria and now dominated the Near East. Nebuchadnezzar ruled for 43 years (605-562 BC), the longest reign in Babylonian history, and transformed Babylon into the ancient world's greatest city. He is known in the Bible as the conqueror of Jerusalem and in Babylonian records as a builder king.
What happened
Militarily, Nebuchadnezzar campaigned annually in the Levant. He besieged Jerusalem in 597 BC, deporting King Jehoiachin and the elite; when Zedekiah rebelled, he destroyed Jerusalem in 586 BC, burning Solomon's Temple and initiating the Babylonian Exile that shaped Judaism. He also fought Egypt, besieged Tyre for 13 years (585-572 BC), and campaigned in Arabia. His armies secured Babylonian control from the Persian Gulf to the Mediterranean.
Why it still matters
Nebuchadnezzar's greatest legacy was building. He rebuilt Babylon with massive walls (the outer wall was 11 miles long), the Ishtar Gate with its blue glazed bricks, the Processional Way, and temples to Marduk. He likely built the Hanging Gardens, one of the Seven Wonders, though this is debated. Babylonian records praise him as a restorer of temples and cities. The Book of Daniel portrays him as a prideful tyrant humbled by God. He died in 562 BC, and his empire collapsed 23 years later to Cyrus the Great.
