Newton Publishes Principia

Newton's Principia was published in 1687.

Setting the scene

By 1687, natural philosophy was dominated by Descartes' vortex theory and Aristotelian ideas. Johannes Kepler had described planetary motion mathematically in 1609, and Galileo had shown that objects accelerate uniformly, but no one had unified terrestrial and celestial mechanics. Isaac Newton, born in 1643, had developed calculus and his theory of gravitation during the plague years of 1665-1666 at Woolsthorpe, but kept it private. Edmond Halley, after failing to derive planetary orbits, visited Newton in 1684 and learned Newton had solved the problem years earlier.

What happened

Halley persuaded Newton to write up his work and funded its publication. Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica was published July 5, 1687, in Latin. In three books, Newton stated his three laws of motion and universal gravitation: every mass attracts every other mass with a force proportional to their masses and inversely proportional to the square of their distance. He used this to derive Kepler's laws, explain tides, predict the shape of Earth, and demonstrate that the same laws govern apples falling and planets orbiting.

Why it still matters

Principia created modern physics and the scientific worldview. It demonstrated that the universe operates according to mathematical laws discoverable by reason, not divine whim or occult forces. It enabled the Industrial Revolution through mechanics, allowed precise navigation and the calculation of Halley's Comet return in 1758, and remained the foundation of physics until Einstein's relativity in 1905. Newton became the most revered scientist in history, and Principia is considered the most important scientific book ever written. The Royal Society's president said it was a work 'that will never be excelled.'

Background

Edmond Halley helped finance the publication. Even centuries later, this episode remains a reference point for how empires rise, fracture, and transform.
