Nintendo Releases the Game Boy in Japan

Nintendo launched the Game Boy in Japan on April 21, 1989.

Setting the scene

1980s portable gaming had seen failures like battery-hungry backlight experiments and tiny cartridges that bent pins. Nintendo chose a monochrome STN display and efficient design so AA batteries could last through long flights and road trips.

What happened

Tetris as a pack-in title turned a Soviet-designed puzzle game into a cultural bridge at the Cold War's thawing edge. Link cables later enabled Pokémon trading frenzies.

Why it still matters

Competing color handhelds eventually pressured Nintendo, but original Game Boy units soldiered on for years. Memorable detail: the vertical form factor with the D-pad on the left became a template still echoed in retro mini consoles.

Background

The Game Boy proved that battery life and durable hardware sometimes beat flashy specs in mobile gaming.
