Nintendo Switch Releases Worldwide

Nintendo launched the Switch in March 2017, selling out in many markets after the Wii U's commercial disappointment.

Setting the scene

The Wii U's GamePad confusion taught Nintendo to communicate a single elevator pitch: play on TV, then lift the tablet-like unit and keep the same session on a flight.

What happened

Launch window leaned on Breath of the Wild as a system seller, while 1-2-Switch showcased motion party tricks. Third-party ports eventually flooded the eShop as developers chased the install base.

Why it still matters

Battery life and thermals stayed talking points, but attach rates for first-party franchises carried profits. Memorable detail: the satisfying click sound when sliding controllers onto the rail became a meme of tactile design.

Background

The Switch restored Nintendo's hardware credibility and normalized detachable Joy-Con controllers and cartridge-based portable play for HD titles.
