By 1859, naturalists knew species changed but lacked a mechanism. Darwin, after his Beagle voyage (1831-36) and reading Malthus, developed natural selection by 1838 but delayed publishing.

What happened

Alfred Russel Wallace's 1858 manuscript prompted Darwin to publish. On the Origin of Species was published November 24, 1859, and sold out in one day. It argued species evolve through natural selection preserving favorable traits.

Why it still matters

Origin revolutionized biology, providing a unifying theory. It challenged creation accounts and sparked debate. By the 1870s evolution was accepted. It established humans as animals related to all life, fundamentally altering self-understanding and remaining one of history's most influential books.
