Setting the scene
Rana Plaza collapsed April 24, 2013, in Dhaka, Bangladesh, killing 1,134 garment workers and injuring 2,500. The eight-story factory building, housing clothing factories for Western brands, collapsed due to structural failure after cracks appeared the day before but workers were ordered back.
What happened
The disaster exposed deadly conditions in fast fashion supply chains. Brands including Benetton, Primark, and Walmart had clothes made there. It was the deadliest garment factory disaster in history.
Why it still matters
Rana Plaza led to the Accord on Fire and Building Safety, improving conditions for millions of workers. April 24 sparked the modern ethical fashion movement.
