Steve Jobs Is Born

Steve Jobs was born on February 24, 1955.

Setting the scene

Steven Paul Jobs was born on February 24, 1955, in San Francisco and adopted by Paul and Clara Jobs of Mountain View, California. He explored electronics as a teenager with neighbor Hewlett-Packard engineer Bill Hewlett.

What happened

Jobs dropped out of Reed College, traveled to India, and in 1976 co-founded Apple Computer in a garage with Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne, launching the Apple II and later the Macintosh with a 1984 Super Bowl ad.

Why it still matters

After exile from Apple, he built NeXT and Pixar before returning to lead the iPod, iPhone, and iPad era. Memorable detail: Jobs wore the same black turtleneck, Levi's 501 jeans, and New Balance sneakers daily—Issey Miyake made him hundreds of identical shirts so he would not waste time choosing clothes.

Background

The iPhone arrived decades later.
