Tetris Is Created

Alexey Pajitnov created Tetris in June 1984 while working at the Soviet Academy of Sciences.

Setting the scene

Soviet computing environments lacked commercial software culture; Pajitnov shared Tetris informally across research institutes before licensing became a geopolitical maze. Western companies courted rights through unfamiliar state export channels.

What happened

Simple rules—rotate seven shapes, clear lines—hid deep speed-run skill ceilings. The game's geometry influenced everything from mobile match-threes to battle royale inventory Tetris jokes.

Why it still matters

The Game Boy bundle later introduced Tetris to millions of Western kids as synonymous with handheld gaming. Memorable detail: the name merges the Greek prefix 'tetra' (four) with 'tennis,' Pajitnov's favorite sport.

Background

Tetris became one of the most ported games in history, shaping puzzle design and music earworms for decades.
