The Thai cave rescue occurred June 23-July 10, 2018, when 12 boys and their soccer coach were trapped in Tham Luang cave by monsoon flooding. An international team of divers rescued them in a complex operation, sedating the boys and guiding them through 2.5 miles of flooded passages.

What happened

British divers found them alive July 2 after nine days. The rescue involved 10,000 people. One Thai Navy SEAL, Saman Kunan, died during the operation. All 13 were extracted July 8-10.

Why it still matters

The rescue captivated the world and demonstrated international cooperation and human ingenuity. July 10, 2018, marked a miraculous survival story.
