Setting the scene
Dubai's government-backed developer Emaar began Burj Dubai in 2004 to diversify the emirate's economy beyond oil, hiring Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and architect Adrian Smith, who had designed Chicago's Willis Tower.
What happened
The tower opened on January 4, 2010, renamed Burj Khalifa after Abu Dhabi ruler Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan aided Dubai's debt crisis. It stands 828 meters (2,717 feet) with 163 floors above ground.
Why it still matters
It remains the world's tallest building and includes residences, offices, and the At.mosphere restaurant. Memorable detail: workers poured concrete only at night during summer because daytime heat above 40°C (104°F) could cause the mix to set unevenly before it reached upper floors.
