University of Bologna Founded

Setting the scene

By 1088, Europe was experiencing an intellectual revival—the Carolingian Renaissance had preserved learning, and the Investiture Controversy created demand for legal expertise. Bologna, a prosperous Italian city on trade routes, attracted students who wanted to study Roman law, which was being rediscovered from Justinian's Corpus Juris Civilis. Unlike earlier monastic schools, these students were laymen seeking professional training for careers in law, administration, and the Church.

What happened

Around 1088, a guild of students studying law under the jurist Irnerius formally organized themselves as a universitas (corporation). This is traditionally considered the founding of the University of Bologna. The students, who were older and often wealthy, hired teachers, set curriculum, and paid salaries. This student-run model was unique—students elected the rector and could fine professors for being late or skipping material. The university specialized in law, both civil (Roman) and canon (church), attracting students from across Europe.

Why it still matters

The University of Bologna became the model for universities in southern Europe and established the concept of a university as a self-governing corporation of scholars. It introduced degrees (bachelor, master, doctor), examinations, and the idea of academic freedom. Bologna's focus on law created a class of legally trained administrators who staffed emerging nation-states. The university is the oldest continuously operating university in the world, demonstrating the medieval origins of higher education. Its student-run model contrasted with the teacher-run model of Paris, establishing two templates for universities that persist today.
