Setting the scene

By 1895, physicists were experimenting with cathode ray tubes—vacuum tubes with electric current. Wilhelm Röntgen, a German professor at Würzburg University, was studying these rays on November 8, 1895, when he noticed a fluorescent screen across the room glowing even though the tube was covered in black cardboard. He realized an unknown ray was passing through the cardboard and air.

What happened

Röntgen spent weeks in his lab investigating, discovering the rays passed through flesh but not bone, and through wood but not metal. On December 22, he made the first medical X-ray—of his wife Anna's hand, showing her bones and wedding ring. She reportedly said 'I have seen my death.' He called them 'X-rays' for unknown. He published his findings December 28, 1895, and refused to patent them, wanting humanity to benefit freely.

Why it still matters

Röntgen's discovery revolutionized medicine overnight—by 1896, X-rays were used in hospitals worldwide to locate bullets and fractures. He won the first Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901. X-rays led to discovery of radioactivity by Becquerel, and to CT scans, MRIs, and modern medical imaging. The discovery also revealed radiation dangers—early experimenters suffered burns and cancer, leading to safety protocols. Röntgen's work opened the atomic age, showing that invisible rays could reveal the body's interior, fundamentally changing diagnosis and saving billions of lives.
