Setting the scene

Eli Whitney patented the cotton gin on March 14, 1794 (applied 1793), a machine that revolutionized American agriculture and entrenched slavery. Whitney, a Yale graduate from Massachusetts, was visiting Georgia in 1792 when he learned that short-staple cotton, which grew well inland, was unprofitable because its seeds clung tightly to fibers, requiring laborious hand cleaning. Whitney devised a machine with a cylinder covered in wire teeth that pulled cotton fibers through a mesh, while seeds, too large to pass, fell away.

What happened

The gin could clean 50 pounds of cotton per day, versus one pound by hand—a 50-fold increase in productivity. Whitney and his partner Phineas Miller hoped to profit by charging farmers a fee, but the design was simple and easily copied. Patent infringement was rampant, and Whitney spent years in costly litigation, earning little. Despite this, the gin spread rapidly across the South. By 1800, U.S. cotton production had increased from 1.5 million pounds in 1790 to 35 million pounds.

Why it still matters

The cotton gin had catastrophic unintended consequences. It made short-staple cotton enormously profitable, leading to the expansion of cotton cultivation across the Deep South and the dramatic increase in demand for enslaved labor. The enslaved population grew from 700,000 in 1790 to 3.2 million in 1850, and the domestic slave trade flourished. The gin, intended to reduce labor, instead made slavery more profitable and entrenched it, making the Civil War virtually inevitable. Whitney's invention exemplifies how technology can have opposite effects from its inventor's intentions, transforming the American economy and society.
