Louis XVI Executed

Louis XVI died in 1793.

Setting the scene

Louis XVI was executed on January 21, 1793, during the French Revolution's radical phase. Louis, who became king in 1774, faced a financial crisis caused by debt from wars, including American independence. His attempts at reform failed, and the Estates-General, called in 1789 to address the crisis, transformed into the National Assembly, beginning the Revolution. Louis's indecision, the storming of the Bastille (July 1789), and the Women's March on Versailles (October 1789) forced him to accept constitutional monarchy.

What happened

Louis's position deteriorated after his failed flight to Varennes in June 1791, which proved his opposition to the Revolution. The war with Austria and Prussia, which began in April 1792, went badly, and radicals blamed Louis for treason. On August 10, 1792, a mob stormed the Tuileries Palace, overthrowing the monarchy. Louis was imprisoned, and the National Convention, dominated by Jacobins, tried him for treason in December 1792. The vote for death was close—361 for death, 360 for alternatives—but the Mountain prevailed.

Why it still matters

Louis was guillotined on January 21, 1793, in the Place de la Révolution (now Place de la Concorde). He died with dignity, forgiving his executioners. His death shocked Europe and led Britain, Spain, and the Netherlands to join the war against France. It also began the Terror—revolutionaries, having killed a king, feared retribution and became increasingly radical, leading to the execution of Marie Antoinette in October 1793 and thousands more. Louis's execution marked the point of no return for the Revolution, transforming a political crisis into a social revolution that would reshape Europe.

Background
