First Photography Experiments

Niépce and others experimented around 1826.

Setting the scene

The first permanent photograph was created in 1826 or 1827 by Nicéphore Niépce, a French inventor, using a process he called heliography ('sun drawing'). Niépce had been experimenting since the 1810s with light-sensitive materials, trying to reproduce images from a camera obscura. After years of trial and error with various substances, he used a pewter plate coated with bitumen of Judea, a naturally occurring asphalt that hardens when exposed to light. He placed the plate in a camera obscura aimed at the view from his window at Le Gras in Saint-Loup-de-Varennes.

What happened

The exposure lasted at least eight hours, perhaps several days, during which the sun moved across the sky, illuminating both sides of buildings. Niépce then washed the plate with lavender oil and petroleum, dissolving the unhardened bitumen and leaving a permanent, though faint, positive image. The resulting photograph, titled 'View from the Window at Le Gras,' shows the rooftops and countryside, though details are difficult to discern. It is the oldest surviving camera photograph.

Why it still matters

Niépce's heliography was impractical due to extremely long exposures, but he partnered with Louis Daguerre in 1829. After Niépce's death in 1833, Daguerre developed the daguerreotype process, announced in 1839, which reduced exposure times to minutes. Meanwhile, William Henry Fox Talbot in England developed the calotype negative-positive process. Niépce's 1826 photograph marks the birth of photography, a technology that would revolutionize art, science, journalism, and memory itself, fundamentally changing how humans document and perceive reality.
