By 1991 hair metal dominated MTV while Seattle bands built an underground scene around Sub Pop's cheap flannel aesthetic. Nirvana's debut Bleach had cult success, but Geffen subsidiary DGC signed them hoping for underground credibility with mainstream reach. Producer Butch Vig polished sound without losing rawness in Smart Studios and Sound City sessions.

What happened

Nevermind was released on September 24, 1991, with Smells Like Teen Spirit as the lead single after months of label pressure. Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, and Dave Grohl channeled Pixies dynamics into anthems about apathy and alienation. The album knocked Michael Jackson's Dangerous from the Billboard top spot in January 1992.

Why it still matters

Nevermind sold over 30 million copies worldwide and made grunge a global fashion and sound, though Cobain struggled with fame until his 1994 death. It ended the dominance of 1980s glam on rock radio. Memorable detail: the swimming baby cover photo was shot in a Pasadena pool with Spencer Elden, who later sued over the image's use.
