Setting the scene
By 476, the Western Roman Empire existed in name only. After the sack of Rome in 410 and 455, real power lay with barbarian generals like Ricimer who installed puppet emperors. Julius Nepos, recognized by Constantinople, was overthrown in 475 by his magister militum Orestes, who installed his own son Romulus—a boy of about ten—as emperor. The nickname 'Augustulus' meaning 'little Augustus' was mocking, and the Eastern emperor Zeno never recognized him, continuing to support Nepos in exile in Dalmatia.
What happened
The crisis came when Orestes refused land grants to his foederati troops, mainly Heruli, Sciri, and Turcilingi. Their leader Odoacer, whose father had served with Orestes under Attila, led a revolt. He defeated and executed Orestes at Pavia on August 28, then captured Ravenna on September 4. Rather than proclaim himself emperor, Odoacer forced Romulus to abdicate before the Senate, then sent the Western imperial regalia to Zeno with a message that one emperor now sufficed.
Why it still matters
Odoacer spared Romulus due to his youth, granting him a pension of 6,000 solidi and exile at Castellum Lucullanum near Naples, where he may have lived into the 510s. The date September 4, 476 became traditional for the 'fall of Rome,' though it was largely symbolic—Nepos lived until 480, the Senate continued, and Odoacer ruled as King of Italy under nominal Eastern sovereignty.
