What happened
On October 4, 1957, at 10:28 p.m. Moscow time, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1 from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The 184-pound aluminum sphere, 23 inches in diameter with four trailing antennas, was the first artificial satellite to orbit Earth. It circled the planet every 96 minutes at 18,000 mph, broadcasting a simple radio beep that amateur operators worldwide could hear. The launch shocked the world—Americans, who assumed technological superiority, realized the Soviets could now deliver nuclear weapons to U.S. soil. The New York Times called it 'a devastating blow to American prestige.'
Why it still matters
Sputnik triggered the Space Race and transformed education and technology. The U.S. responded with the National Defense Education Act in 1958, pouring billions into science education, and created NASA in July 1958 and DARPA in February 1958. The launch led to the Apollo program and the moon landing in 1969. It also accelerated the arms race and Cold War tensions. Sputnik demonstrated that space was the new high ground and that scientific achievement was a measure of national power. The satellite burned up in the atmosphere on January 4, 1958, after 1,440 orbits, but its impact lasted decades, fundamentally changing American education, research funding, and the perception of Soviet capabilities.
