The U.S. Capitol was attacked January 6, 2021, by a mob of Trump supporters seeking to stop certification of Biden's election. Rioters breached the Capitol, forcing lawmakers to evacuate. Five people died, including one Capitol Police officer.
What happened
The attack was incited by Trump's rally claiming the election was stolen. It was the first time the Capitol had been breached since 1814. Trump was impeached a second time but acquitted.
Why it still matters
January 6 exposed threats to peaceful transfer of power and led to hundreds of prosecutions.
